How to Choose a Protein Bar

When it comes to choosing snacks and more specifically, protein bars, there are three key things I like to look for: protein, fat, and fiber.

I typically choose a protein bar with at least 10-15 grams of protein. Why? Because a protein bar is a snack. I usually aim for 25 grams of protein with meals to help maintain lean muscle mass and feelings of fullness. So if you are having a snack, you don't need as much.

As for fat, I like to look for about 7-10 grams of fat. Why? Because again, a protein bar is a snack. I usually aim for 15 grams of fat with meals to help with feelings of satiety and hormone health. So if you are having a snack, you don't need as much.

Make sure to look at fiber. The general recommendation for fiber is 25-30 grams per day. Why should you care about this? Fiber helps you go to the bathroom and it helps you feel more full while taking in fewer calories. When looking for a protein bar, aim for at least a few grams. If you can get 5, great! If not, three is ideal.

Last but not least, added sugar. There is a lot of added sugar in basically every packaged food you can get your hands on (not to be dramatic but its true, pick up a box of your favorite snack and you will see added sugar listed.) Look for a protein bar with under 4 grams of added sugar (4 grams=1 tsp)
